I love this time of year! The weather is perfect, the decorations surround us, the smell of fresh baked goods, crisp wine and our annual events in Loudoun County, Virginia.

Loudoun County, VA celebrates the holidays with great annual events. Two of my favorites:

Christmas at Oatlands

This year’s Christmas celebration at Oatlands will focus on the tradition of weddings at the mansion. During the holiday season in Leesburg, VA , there will be a number of wedding gowns from different eras on display including the wedding dress of Rebecca Dulaney (niece of George and Kate Carter) that she wore to her wedding to John Hill Carter Beverly in 1881 and the gown Margaret Finley wore to her 1932 wedding at Oatlands. In addition to wedding gowns, Oatlands in Leesburg Virginia will come alive with historic and handcrafted decorations, some featuring materials from the gardens on the property. The holiday décor will also feature an abundance of greenery and beautifully decorated Christmas trees. There will also be live music in the Mansion on Saturdays and Sundays.

First Night Leesburg

First Night Leesburg will host over 100 wonderful performances at 20 indoor locations in downtown Leesburg. Enjoy jazz, classical music, puppet shows, bluegrass, folk music, rock & roll, magicians and much more! First Night concludes at midnight with a traditional Grand Illumination gathering on the courthouse green.

Hauntings – Leesburg’s annual scary tour de force at the Loudoun Museum – kicks off tonight. This nighttime tour will leave you shaking in your booties, as costumed interpreters regale you with hair-raising, historical tales about Leesburg’s haunted homes and businesses! Spoooky!

The tours take place on Friday, Oct. 23, 6-10 pm, and Saturday, Oct. 24, 6-10 pm. Cost is $15/person in advance, $20 at the door. Oatlands Mansion: Paranormal Activity

When you think of Halloween, you think of goblins, witches, monsters and GHOST! It's a spooky world out there and you can experience first hand how ghost play on Halloween.

The Oatlands Mansion will be conducting paranormal tours starting October 26 and running through October 30. Visitors can take advantage of an evening tour with a knowledgeable guide through the mansion. Learn about ghost legends and hear about some of the paranormal activities that were found with ongoing investigations. As you tour the mansion, you will also hear personal paranormal accounts from the guides and maybe have your own personal, chilling paranormal experience.

Discover the strange and spooky side of aviation and space at the Smithsonian's National Air and Space Museum's Udvar-Hazy Center's Annual Air and Scare! Arrive in costume for this annual event, which features trick-or treating, hands-on activities, face-painting, costumed Star Wars characters, and much more.

This year’s event will kick off with a Costume Parade at 2:30 pm. With more than twenty activity and discovery stations and six candy stations, Air & Scare has something for everyone in the family! For the youngest visitors there will be story times, face-painting stations, and hands-on activities. Older kids will enjoy simulator rides and seeing the SR-71 Blackbird that plays a key role in the current Transformers movie. Some of the spooky activities planned for that day include: the Alien Blood Boil Discovery Station, Witch Story times, a Halloween Tattoo Station, demonstration of a Mars Rover with Martian Roadkill, and Creepy Crawley Robots.

16th Annual Fall Pumpkin Harvest

It is officially, fall is finally here. The cool crisp breeze across my face and the bold beautiful colors that decorate Loudoun County help bring out the beauty that lies within Loudoun County.

When I think of Fall in Loudoun County, I think of warm delectable pies, great wine on the porch, holiday events, arts and outdoor recreation! Take a walk through our historic villages or tour some of our famous mansions and vineyards that are sure to leave you breathless.

Our outdoor recreation and nature attractions are exceptional. Who can resist a bike ride along the historic W&OD Railroad Regional Park or take a hike along the Appalachian Trail.

Summer Music Festival

Saturday, September 12, 2009 rain or shine the Loudoun Music Festival is back for it's 6th season. Family friendly, this event has something for your entire family. Have fun at any age. Kids can bounce and tire themselves in moon bounces or enjoy artistic face painting. But it doesn't stop there for the kiddos, there will be more fun activities that the kids can enjoy.

For the adults, if you love live music you don't want to miss out on our live music performances with music from the 70's, 80's and 90's! Dance the night away with plenty of room for you to show off your moves. Spread out on the lawn or take center stage in front of the live performance stage. 40th Annual Bluemont Fair

Come out and join us September 19-20, 2009 at the 40th annual Bluemont Fair. Nestled in the foothills of Viginia's Blue Ridge Mountains, this old country fair offers live music, over 100 crafters, antiques, local art, wine tasting and more.

Take out your running shoes and participate in the Bluemont Fair 10K race that takes you through the beautiful countryside that surrounds the historic village. Shop for fresh produce at our Farmer's Market and try some of the best homemade sweet treats.

Bring the kids to join in on the fun and participate in the children's art show. Dazzle them with contests, interactive crafts, games, clowns, farm animals, helium balloons and more at the children's fair. Kids can also operate a model train that runs through a miniature village. Dance with puppets as they play along to old-fashioned melodies.

Loudoun County Videos Win Emmy Award!

The Loudoun Convention & Visitors Association is now Emmy Award-winning!

This past Saturday, the Visit Loudoun Heritage Series Videos were awarded an Emmy! The videos were created to introduce visitors and potential visitors to the heritage and culture of Loudoun county through short clips highlighting wineries, historic towns and villages, events and much more.

We are thrilled to be honored with this award, which is known as the industry’s benchmark for the recognition of television excellence. The honor came from the National Capital Chesapeake Bay Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, a nonprofit, professional organization. The Emmy was awarded in the Chesapeake Heritage Program category, which had nine entries and three nominations.

The Loudoun Convention & Visitors Association has been nominated for the 2008 Emmy Awards for our tourism videos!! The National Capital Chesapeake Bay Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences is a nonprofit, professional organization. The Academy's Emmy Award is the industry's benchmark for the recognition of television excellence.

Our video features the history of Oatlands, a National Trust Site that features an 1804 Greek Revival and a four acre English terraced garden. Out of nine entries, our Visit Loudoun Heritage Series Video was one out of three that were nominated for the 2008 Emmy Awards. The Loudoun Spring Farm Tour attracts thousands of visitors from across the country to the beautiful Loudoun Valleys, with views of the Blue Ridge, Short Hill and Sugarloaf Mountains; all just minutes west of Washington Dulles International Airport. The Farm Tour weekend serves as an introduction to Loudoun's growing season, and many of the farms on the Tour have products available throughout the spring and summer. Spring Time at the Wineries

Spring is here and as the weather warms, the wineries are coming to life. Here's an overview of what's happening at the wineries and vineyards:

Summer hours –Now that the weather is warming up and visitors are coming to the area, many wineries are expanding their hours, with several staying open until 7 or 8pm on Fridays and Saturdays.
Planting – Many vineyards are planting now, either adding stock to already planted varietals or planting new varietals to experiment with. Albariño and Petit Manseng are examples of varietals gaining popularity in Virginia winemaking and therefore being planted in more and more vineyards this season.
Hiring – With increased hours, bottling days, and festival season beginning, several wineries are hiring staff or seeking volunteers to help specifically with bottling and working festivals. Volunteering is a great way to learn about & earn wine.
Expanding the Market – Interest in selling Virginia wine to markets outside the state continues to increase. Two wineries are now licensed to distribute their wine to DC and Maryland and several others are looking to become licensed for self distribution in these areas.
London International Wine Fair – The LCVA will be joining Corcoran and Breaux Vineyards at the London International May 12th-14th. Approximately 8-10 Virginia wineries will be represented in addition to Corcoran and Breaux. Wine regions from all around the world attend this strictly trade only event which saw approximately 15,000 visitors in 2008.
Willowcroft Farm Winery is celebrating 25 years this year and Tarara Winery is celebrating 20 years this year.

The LCVA has moved its office and the Loudoun County Visitors Center back to Market Station in the Leesburg historic district. The historic district in downtown Leesburg is filled with charming brick sidewalks beautiful, historic architecture and many one-of-a-kind shops and restaurants. A charming, intimate atmosphere, the Historic Downtown is host to specialty shops with an eclectic mix of home furnishings, gifts, ladies and children's clothing, artwork, stylish jewelry, gifts, cafés, spas, traditional antiques, Colonial and Civil War walking tours and more. LCVA Office Hours: Monday-Friday, 9am-5pm. Loudoun County Visitors Center Hours: Daily 9am-5pm, Closed Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s Day.

Part of Presidential History

Loudoun County, VA is just 25 miles from DC but this month, Loudoun County finds a way to stay connected to the most infuential Inauguration in History. Since its founding in 1757, Loudoun County has experienced first-hand many significant political events and connections. From George Washington traveling along a historic Loudoun road to witnessing the battlefield death of a sitting U.S. Senator, to significant events today, including a rally in October of 2008 by then Presidential Candidate Senator Barack Obama, Loudoun has witnessed pivotal political and presidential history.

Loudoun County has put together a Political and Historical look into the area with a Historical Tour/Itinerary that takes its visitors on a tour of some of the most signifigant historical sites in America, all located in Loudoun County. Those who are lucky enough to have a ticket to any of the Inauguration Events are encouraged to take the time while in the area to continue their mark in history and take this tour through Loudoun County.
